It seems likely that the jurors' decision to acquit the defendant may have been a result of the multiple contradictory statements by the prosecution's four witnesses.

A) may have been a result of the multiple contradictory statements by the prosecution's four witnesses

B) may have been a result of contradictory statements between the prosecution and its witnesses

C) resulted because of the four contradictory statements by the prosecution's multiple witnesses

D) resulted from multiple statements contradicting the prosecution's witnesses

E) resulted from multiple contradictory statements by the prosecution's four witnesses

hi clipea12,
the question tests us on following issues..
1) redundancy : may and likely should not be used together.. likely itself means "may"..
2) correct idiom as mentioned above is "x resulted from y"
3) change in original meaning..

lets look at the choices..

A) may have been a result of the multiple contradictory statements by the prosecution's four witnesses
redundancy... point (1)

B) may have been a result of contradictory statements between the prosecution and its witnesses
same as A along with change in meaning

C) resulted because of the four contradictory statements by the prosecution's multiple witnesses
wrong idiom...(2)

D) resulted from multiple statements contradicting the prosecution's witnesses
everything correct but change in meaning.. number of witness 4 missing

E) resulted from multiple contradictory statements by the prosecution's four witnesses
correct...

Felt that the meaning in answer D made more sense ! do we have to stick with intended meaning presented in A ?
yes you have to be closest to the original meaning...
and this is often tested in the choices..

D suggests that there was no dis-harmony among statements of the prosecution's witnesses; however, "someone" made statements that contradicted the statements of the prosecution's witnesses.

The original sentence says that there "was" dis-harmony among statements of the prosecution's witnesses themselves (so, prosecution's witnesses gave mutually contradictory statements). I feel this also makes perfect sense (let me know why you feel that this is not making sense).
