As the music of the legendary composers Cole Porter and Sammy Kahn bear out, many of the best songs to emerge in the 1940's were based not on topical themes of the day but on more introspective themes such as love and loss.

A. As the music of the legendary composers Cole Porter and Sammy Kahn bear out
should be singular

B. The music of the legendary composers Cole Porter and Sammy Kahn bears out that
changes the structure

C. As the music of the legendary composers, like Cole Porter and Sammy Kahn, bear out
changes meaning

D. Like the music of the legendary composers Cole Porter and Sammy Kahn bear out
like is wrong

E. As the music of the legendary composers Cole Porter and Sammy Kahn bears out
correct

Hi Chetan, could you help me understand that what is the difference between option B & E? Is it the case that option B is wrong due to the use of 'that' with a comma after it?

Option B is incorrect because option B means that " Music of X & Y is bringing change in themes of new songs to emerge", contrary to original intent "Phasing out of Music of X & Y is bringing change in themes of new songs to emerge".

Hope difference is clear now..

The verb has to be singular to match the subject 'the music'. Drop A, C, and D.
The tone of the prompt is to compare the similarities between two arms by using the comparator 'as'. B misses this important intent by using the indicative mood of incidental occurrence.
