The century plant, Agave americana , is an example of a variety of agave that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies ; and leaves a long seed stalk.

that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies
using most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies
that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; and then dying
that, after it uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; it then dies
that as it uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; then dies

if i have to select one answer , i will select A ..but none looks correct to me...
we can use semicolon between two clauses or when providing a list of info ..
But here i am confused with the usage ..
Please help ....

I think "uses, dies and leaves" forms a list which are separated by semicolon...Three actions done by agave

why these are separated by semicolon , they would have separated well just by using commas only ,and also we use semicolon to separate two Independent clauses , carrying subject and verb .

please clarify
thanks

Semicolons can also be used to present a list.I think semicolons are used when elements are wordy, complicated or when there is a list within a list. They Removes ambiguity.
I think the usage of semicolon is justified------> first element of the list.

The century plant, Agave americana , is an example of a variety of agave that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies ; and leaves a long seed stalk.

A. that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies
B. using most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies
C. that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; and then dying
D. that, after it uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; it then dies
E. that as it uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; then dies

here, semicolon gives us the lists of things the Agava plant does and parallelism needs to be maintained in the list.
A. that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies ---> correct uses, dies and leaves are parellel.
B. using most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; dies ---> Incorrect, as it finishes the sentence and dies has no subject.
C. that uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; and then dying ---> uses, "and then dying", and leaves" no parallelism.
D. that, after it uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; it then dies --> same as C
E. that as it uses most of its energy to produce a single, large, fast-growing flower; then dies --> same as C
