The softball team tried to raise enough money to purchase new uniforms for the upcoming season, but between them, the 20 players were only able to raise about 70 percent of the cost.

(A) between them, the 20 players were only able to raise about 70 percent of the cost --> should be "among them"

(B) between them, the 20 players were only able to have raised about 70 percent of the cost --> same as A

(C) among them, the 20 players were only able to raise about 70 percent of the cost --> correct

(D) among them, the 20 players were only able to have raised about 70 percent of the cost --> "able to raise" is correct

(E) among them, only about 70 percent of the cost was raised by 20 players --> meaning changed

Hi, between C & E, isn't E more concise?
Though I understand that C is the official explanation, still have my doubts about option C being wordy.
Is there any other mistake in option E? How does it change the intended meaning?
