Over 89 percent of the fossil-fuel produced in the United Arab Emirate is extracted from sea-based wells, compared with the fossil-fuel from sea-based wells in Canada, where it is only about 27 percent.

A. compared with the fossil-fuel from sea-based wells in Canada, where it is only about 27 percent
Comparison issue - Comparison should be between '89%....in UAE' and '27%...in Canada' whereas 'sea-based wells' is compared with 'fossil fuel...in Canada'

B. compared to Canada, which extracts only about 27 percent
Comparison issue - Comparison should be between '89%....in UAE' and '27%...in Canada' whereas 'sea-based wells' is compared to 'Canada'

C. whereas only about 27 percent of the fossil-fuel is extracted from sea-based wells in Canada
Meaning issue - This seems to suggest that 'of the fossil fuel, produced in UAE', 89% is extracted from sea-based wells and 27% is extracted from sea-based wells in Canada

D. whereas sea-based wells account for only about 27 percent of the fossil-fuel extracted in Canada
IMO, Correct Sea-based well is the common between '89%...in UAE' and '27..in Canada'. Preferred C as it is structurally parallel but felt it has meaning issue.

E. while in Canada it is only about 27 percent
Meaning issue - '89%....in UAE' is only '27% in Canada'

Also, I believe, 'compared...' is a verb-ed modifier. In A & B, modifier is comparing sea-based wells with fossil fuel or Canada whereas intended comparison is between '89%....in UAE' and '27%...in Canada'.

(C) is the correct answer choice. This is not even a case of debatable OA. (D) clearly has an incorrect comparison issue.

What is the source of this Q, gmat1393?

This is not an official question. Private companies will have their own rationale to say D is the answer; however, IMO, that is not the correct choice. Instead, why don't you look at some OG or GmatPrep questions on comparisons?

Hi EducationAisle,

I went with Daagh's logic though the OA seems to be D. Any thoughts? Thank you!
