(D) Christianity in Korea grew indigenously through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as its message grabbed the attention of certain lay people, typically....correct

(E) Christianity grew indigenously through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Korea, as its message grabbed the attention of certain lay people, who typically were......multiple errors...sholud be "those typically were" & modifier error

Ans D

Can you please elaborate the first section? Does the location of the time difference matter? What am I misunderstanding? What are the formal grammar rules about this?

Enlightenment in Europe became popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. vs Enlightenment became popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Europe.

Populism in America became a major factor on the political stage in the late 18th century. vs Populism became a major factor on the political stage in the late 18th century in America.

I can't have a date/time reference right next to another date/time reference?

I guess it does, as you can see, seventeen and eighteen centuries is a noun, and here "in Korea" could act as a modifier. If it does, then Korea will be referring to the first noun it encounters which is "seventeen and eighteen centuries", whereas it should refer to Christianity.
