In the original sentence, "the belief" is compared with "Klaus von Klitzing," which doesn't make sense. All of our other choices fix this problem in various ways, but only one does so clearly. 
Choices (B) and (C) use -ing verbs unnecessarily, making the sentence convoluted and confusing.
Choice (D) is clear. 
Choice (E) might seem tempting, but the phrase "even while" doesn't make sense here because the sentence does not refer to a particular moment in time.
