The elections are seen as a direct contest between sitting US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who was vice-president during the Barack Obama presidency.

A) The elections are seen as a direct contest between sitting US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who was vice-president during the Barack Obama presidency.

B) The elections are seen as a direct contest between sitting US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who were vice-president during the Barack Obama presidency.

C) The elections are seen as a direct contest between sitting US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, during Barack Obama’s presidency, was Vice-President.

D) The elections have been seen as a direct contest between sitting US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who was vice-president during the Barack Obama presidency.

E) The election is seen as a direct contest between the sitting US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who were the vice-president during the Barack Obama presidency.

The question is based on the errors of Subject-Verb agreement and sentence construction.

The first part of the sentence up to the comma in all the options is almost identical, except for small changes. There are changes in tense. The options also contain the singular or plural form of the subject ‘The election’.

Let us examine the last part of the sentence first as there is a clear reason to eliminate options there. The sentence ends with the clause “who was vice-president during the Barack Obama presidency”. In Options A, C, and D, the singular form ‘was’ has been used, whereas in Options B and E, the plural form ‘were’ has been used.

The subject of this verb is Joe Biden, so the singular form ‘was’ is correct. So, Options B and E can be eliminated.

In Option C, the construction of the last part changes. The clause “who was vice-president during the Barack Obama presidency” very clearly modifies Joe Biden. But the construction in the last part of Option C is vague. So, Option C can also be eliminated.

Between A and D, there is a difference in tense. Since the sentence mentions the ‘sitting US President’, we infer that the sentence is referring to the present time and not an action that started in the past and may or may not still be the case. So, the present tense ‘are seen’ is more apt. Option D can also be eliminated.

Therefore, A is the best option.

Jayanthi Kumar.

I don't understand why it can't be "have been seen" in this problem. Doesn't this mean that the action started in the past, but continues to present day? In context of this sentence, people have considered the upcoming elections to be a contest and still continue to see them as a contest between the two candidates. To me "sitting" implies that Trump is the President now and was the President in the past.

This to me makes more sense in the meaning of the sentence. Additionally, the progressive nature of "have been seen" matches the progressive nature of "sitting"
