The sentence provides two benefits of the subnivium: it shields a variety of organisms and it prevents the roots from freezing.
The preserving is not a third benefit but rather the consequence of preventing the roots from freezing.
• Parallelism—Not only X But also Y
The parts after not only and but also must maintain parallel structure.
→ not only shields is not parallel to but IT also prevent
The noun subnivium precedes not only. The pronoun it should not be placed after the second term in this correlative conjunction
Because we have NOUN not only [verbs], we need but also [verbs] without inserting the pronoun it.
→ Corrected: the subnivium not only shields . . . but also prevents
ELIMINATE A
The lack of parallelism in option B is identical to that in option A
• Weird meaning.
→ "preserving" an important food source is a consequence of preventing roots from freezing
• The use of and before preserving is incorrect as this is not the third item in the list of benefits.
