My answer is (C). It took me 01:40.

Reference for "Not only X but also Y": https://dictionary.cambridge.org/gramma ... y-but-also
The key is to maintain parallelism between X and Y.

(A) When "but also" is broken into "but it also", I cannot immediately eliminate it. It reads okay though it is technically not parallel. It feels rather natural to read this option probably it matches the pattern of "IC + Comma + FANBOYS + IC"
Keep for now, thinking there will be a better one.

(B) Even if we accept that "prevents" and "preserves" are compound verbs for "it", there should be no comma before "and preserves".
In addition, to better convey its meaning, we should add "thus" before "preserves", or use present participle phrase as modifier.

(C) Very similar with (A) but clearly removes any concern over parallelism. (A) can be eliminated.

(D) Parallelism issue: "a variety of organisms“ is not parallel with "prevents".

(E) SVA issue: Subject is singular ("The subnivium"), but main verbs are "shield" and "prevent".
There should be no comma before "and preserves".

Because all options include a comma before "but also", we do not need to worry about its appropriateness. Strictly speaking, This comma is not needed for option (C). But, "if you really want to show special emphasis, you can add a comma". (Read more at https://www.grammarly.com/blog/parallel ... y-but-also)

The subnivium, a narrow band of space between the snowpack and the soil, not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but it also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving an important food source for animals.

A) not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but it also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving -> Not only X but also Y, where X and Y should be parallel. "it" is incorrect to use.

B) not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but it also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, and preserves-> Same as A.

C) not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving -> shields and prevents are parallel. preserving is a -ing modifier, which is also correct. Let's keep it.

D) shields not only a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving -> a variety and prevents are not parallel. Incorrect.

E) not only shield a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but also prevent the roots of shrubs from freezing, and preserve -> Shield is incorrect. The subnivium is singular, so we need singular verb, not plural.

So, I think C. :)

The subnivium, a narrow band of space between the snowpack and the soil, not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but it also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving an important food source for animals.

Pre-thinking: The correct parallel structure should use 'not only X but also y'. Rest of the sentence looks fine.

A) not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but it also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving

B) not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but it also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, and preserves

C) not only shields a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving

D) shields not only a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but also prevents the roots of shrubs from freezing, preserving
'a variety of organisms' is not parallel to 'prevents'. shields should have been after 'not only' and not before.

E) not only shield a variety of organisms from the harsh conditions of winter, but also prevent the roots of shrubs from freezing, and preserve
SVA error. 'The subnivium' is a singular subject and should thus use a singular verb 'shields' and not 'shield'

IMO answer should be option C.
