OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The Philadelphia-based architect Louis Kahn spent more than a decade designing and constructing Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban, home of the National Assembly of Bangladesh and a modern monument to Bangladeshi heritage and culture.

A. home of the National Assembly of Bangladesh and a modern monument to Bangladeshi

This answer choice makes correct use of parallelism, using two nouns (home and monument) to describe Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

B. home of the National Assembly of Bangladesh and a modern monument to its

Incorrect.

This answer choice is stylistically flawed. The pronoun its is ambiguous as it can refer to any of the singular nouns in the preceding part of the sentence (Bangladesh, assembly, home).

What helps us identify Pronoun mistakes is the following Stop Sign: Every pronoun in the underlined part of the sentence or after it

C. housing the National Assembly of Bangladesh and a modern monument to Bangladeshi

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and stylistically flawed. The construction A and B (housing and monument) requires that A and B belong to the same part of speech. In this case, A (housing) is a verb, whereas B (monument) is a noun.

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: A and/or/but B

When you identify this structure, make sure it follows these rules:

1. A and B must be of the same part of speech.
2. A and B must be logically parallel.

In addition, by changing home of to housing, the corrected sentence creates an ambiguity mistake. The modifier housing is ambiguous as it can refer either to the architect Louis Kahn or to the parliament building Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban.

D. which houses the National Assembly of Bangladesh and also a modern monument to its

Incorrect.

This answer choice is illogical and stylistically flawed.

By changing home to to which houses, the corrected answer violates the logical parallelism of the original sentence. The corrected sentence now says that Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban houses two things: (A) the National Assembly and (B) a modern monument to Bangladeshi culture (B).

This is illogical and changes the original parallelism in which A and B are two nouns that describe what Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban is: it is (A) home to the National Assembly and a (B) monument to Bangladeshi culture.

In addition, The pronoun its is ambiguous as it can refer to any of the singular nouns in the preceding part of the sentence (Bangladesh, assembly, home).

E. the home to the National Assembly of Bangladesh and a modern monumental of Bangladeshi

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The construction A and B (home and monumental) requires that A and B belong to the same part of speech. In this case, A (home) is a noun, whereas B (monumental) is an adjective.

Furthermore, the adjective monumental is used incorrectly in a noun phrase, where there should have been a noun (monument).
