OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The Laikipia district in Kenya is one of the most unique ecosystems in the world and is one of the few places that providesa stable coexistence for cattle farmers, traditional herding people, and predators.

(A) the most unique ecosystems in the world and is one of the few places that provides

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The relative clause that provides a stable coexistence...predators describes the noun that appears immediately before it, namely, places. Since places is plural, the verb that follows it also needs to be plural. However, provides is singular.

What helps us identify this question as a Relative Clause question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

one of the + plural noun + who/which/that

Whenever you see this Stop Sign, make sure that the following verb is plural.

(B) the most unique ecosystems in the world and is one of the few places that is able to provide

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original Relative Clause error. The relative clause that provides a stable coexistence...predators describes the noun that appears immediately before it, namely, places. Since places is plural, the verb that follows it also needs to be plural. However, is able is singular.

What helps us identify this question as a Relative Clause question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

one of the + plural noun + who/which/that

Whenever you see this Stop Sign, make sure that the following verb is plural.

(C) the most unique ecosystems and one of the few places that provide

Although this answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause error by using a plural verb (provide), it is grammatically incorrect as it misuses the Superlative form indicated here by the use of the word most. The Superlative form requires that the group under comparison be defined. However, this answer choice does not provide information about the group of which the Laikipia district is one of the most unique.

In order for this Superlative to be complete, this group must be defined.

(D) a most unique ecosystem in the world and is one of the few places that provide

Although this answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause error by using a plural verb (provide), it is grammatically incorrect as it misuses the Superlative form indicated here by the use of the word most. Most must be preceded by the word the. In this sentence, most unique is preceded by a.

(E) the most unique ecosystems in the world and is one of the few places that are able to provide[/quote]

This answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause error by using a plural verb (provide) to match the plural subject places.

egmat I read in your concept files that whenever we have "one of the" its following verb is supposed to be treated as singular.

Can you please explain what's going on here.
Thanks
