IMO B is best option

C comes close but because of the comma I ruled it out.

A & E are out because of "contaminating", verb tense is wrong here.

D is out because it changes the meaning.

Is my approach correct?

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

It is important for the welfare of our ecology to prevent the contaminating of water resources.

(A) for the welfare of our ecology to prevent the contaminating of water resources

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. Verb+ing (contaminating) can be used as a noun replacement only when there's no actual noun. Since there is a real noun - contamination - it should be used.

(B) for the welfare of our ecology to prevent contamination of water sources

Incorrect.

Although this answer choice corrects the original mistake by replacing contaminating with contamination, it changes the meaning of the original sentence, by replacing resources with sources.

(C) to prevent the contamination of water resources, for the welfare of our ecology

Verb+ing (contaminating) can be used as a noun replacement only when there's no actual noun. Since there is a real noun - contamination - it should be used.

(D) for our ecology and welfare to prevent the contamination of water resource

Incorrect.

Although this answer choice corrects the original mistake by replacing contaminating with contamination, it changes the meaning of the original sentence by replacing the phrase the welfare of our ecology with our ecology and welfare.

(E) to prevent the contaminating of water resources for our ecology's welfare

Incorrect.

This answer choice repeats the original mistake: Verb+ing (contaminating) can be used as a noun replacement only when there's no actual noun. Since there is a real noun - contamination - it should be used.
