My answer is (C). It took me 36 seconds.
To have apple VS. apple comparison, the subject of the main clause must be comparable to "humans". Eliminate (ABE) for failing to do so.
Eliminate (D) for its lack of parallelism between " to read others’ intentions" and "of displaying awareness".
