I was confused between A and D, option A - 'but have been detected by sighting' doesn't it imply 'sighting' undertook the task of detecting. for eg - Land has been mowed by John (Here John undertook task of mowing), where am I going wrong

Black holes, collapsed stars whose massive gravitational pull traps even light, are invisible to telescopes but have been detected by sighting the swirling eddies of gas being swallowed by the black holes.

A. are invisible to telescopes but have been detected by sighting
B. is invisible to telescopes but detectable by sighting
C. are invisible to telescopes but detectable by the sight of
D. are invisible to telescopes but were detected by the sight of
E. is invisible to telescopes even though they can be detected by the sight of

In B, and E the verb is not correct. "Black holes" is plural so we need a plural verb. Among C, D and A, I eliminated C because after "but" we do not have any verb. Between A, and D I eliminated D, as it uses past tense while the part before "but" uses the present tense.

Hello Dhwanii,

We hope this finds you well.

Having gone through the question and your query, we believe we can resolve your doubt.

In Option A, since "sighting" is a verb, "Black holes...have been detected by sighting..." means that the black holes have been detected through the act of sighting the swirling eddies of gas being swallowed by the black holes.

We hope this helps.
All the best!

Would the error in parallelism in C be fixed by "are invisible to telescopes but are detectable by the sight of"?

Hello freshmint,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, the change you have mentioned here would solve the parallelism issue in Option C.

However, Option C would still not be correct, as it changes the intended meaning.

Option C implies that it is possible for black holes to be detected by something; the intended meaning is that black holes have, in fact, already been detected by something.

We hope this helps.

Hello paridhibajaj,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, Option C alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "detectable by the sight of"; the construction of this phrase incorrectly implies that it is possible for black holes to be detected by something; the intended meaning is that black holes have, in fact, already been detected by something.

We hope this helps.

The sentence talks about a process of sighting blackholes.
C is unclear about that process.
A is far superior to C because it makes clear sense of the process regarding sighting of the blackholes.
