Double = is an Adjective so it modifies noun  
 In this case, your initial investment is a noun phrase therefore, double must be used, twice is used incorrectly.

D. buying shares in the ACME Corporation can result in a loss of at least  double  -  double is an adjective   so it modifies noun  correctly .

E. buying shares in the ACME Corporation can result in loss of at least  twice  -  twice is an adverb  therefore it cannot modify noun.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

1) Twice = is an Adverb so it modifies verb, adjective or another adverb 2) Double = is an Adjective so it modifies noun So, in this case, investment is a noun therefore, double must be used, twice is used incorrectly. I also missed noticiting this difference. We need to be more laser focused while solving.

What's the difference of these two words? 
Would it be correct to say "buying shares in the ACME Corporation can result in a loss of at least  twice  your initial investment", or we can only say "buying shares in the ACME Corporation can result in a loss of at least  double  your initial investment"?
