Hey adalfu, with your explanation above can you please explain why D is incorrect. I am still unlcear on why D is incorrect.

I thought "charged with both (X) false doctrine teaching and (Y) administrative misconduct are parallel.

Also, I ruled out A because A has "charged with administrative misconduct". Instead it should have been "charged for administrative misconduct".

I thought "charged with both (X) false doctrine teaching and (Y) administrative misconduct are parallel.

Also, I ruled out A because A has "charged with administrative misconduct". Instead it should have been "charged for administrative misconduct".

lets break down that phrase:

charged with both
false doctrine teaching = adj + adj (i.e., noun used as an adj -- e.g., shoe store) + simple gerund (i.e., -ing participle form without an article, a or the)
and
administrative misconduct = adj + noun

The rule is that you can't have a simple gerund parallel with a noun. you need to have a complex gerund (the teaching of false doctrine) instead.

Hope that helps.

Thanks adalfu. that helps. I was not aware of the rule.

Also, I am not able to clearly break down a clause into noun or adjective or gerund....always make mistake in doing that...:(

the MGMAT SC book does a good job detailing the nuances of parallelism within different "structures." you should refer to that book if you have it.

As per you post D can be interpreted as
charged (1) with false doctrine teaching and (2) administrative misconduct
or
charged with (1) false doctrine teaching and (2) administrative misconduct

Is this correct?

Isn't "both" redundant in D. Thoughts?

thanks
esledge
The issue is parallelism (he's charged with 2 things). Both B and D have ambiguous interpretations of what those two things are.

Because of the repeated "with" in A, we are forced to realize that the sentence up to "charged" is common to both endings.
(A) ...charged: (1) with teaching false doctrine and (2) with administrative misconduct

But (B) could be interpreted as:
...charged with teaching false: (1) doctrine and (2) administrative misconduct
...charged with teaching: (1) false doctrine and (2) administrative misconduct
...charged with: (1) teaching false doctrine and (2) administrative misconduct
The last interpretation is correct, and the others are a little silly (how do you teach false administrative misconduct, I wonder?), but since another choice is more clear you must go with it.

(D) has similar possible interpretations, plus the awkardness of using "teaching" as a noun.

The doctrinal dispute resulted in the dismissal of the president of the seminary, who was charged with teaching false doctrine and with administrative misconduct.

(A) charged with teaching false doctrine and with administrative misconduct------- with A and with B is the correct construction. Keep it.

(B) charged with teaching false doctrine and administrative misconduct------- teaching could be added with admin misconduct and this is not correct.

(C) being charged that he taught false doctrine and administrative misconduct------- being charged that he taught is wrong

(D) charged with both false doctrine teaching and administrative misconduct------- ambiguous connection of false with doctrine teaching and misconduct.

(E) teaching false doctrine and administrative misconduct as charged-------- same as D

A is the corect answer.
