Josh : People are renting fewer DVD's because probably it's cheaper to buy them as oppose to renting them.
Maxwell: The above argument is wrong because only 4 million DVD's were sold as compared to 10 million fewer DVD rentals.

So in order to weaken Max's claim, we have to show that buying DVD's cheaper did hurt the rental business.

Now look at answer choices:
A) In 2012 Webflix rented out more DVDs than it sold. // well this doesn't account for fewer DVD rentals ..eliminate.
(B)In 2012 two new DVD services that rent but that do not sell DVDs became available nationwide. // This also doesn't help us weaken the argument. If anything it weakens the argument by pointing out that more DVD rentals are opened may be because their is demand for it.
(C)Most of the DVD rental services in the country rent DVDs at a discount on certain nights of the week.// Renting DVD's at Discount also doesn't help. It strengthen Josh's argument.
(D)People often buy DVDs of movies that they have previously seen in a theater.// Irrelevant
(E)People who own DVDs frequently loan them to their friends. // Correct. If people are buying the movies but loaning them to their friends. It's affecting the renting business. This weakens max's argument.

After I read your answer I went thru the question again and found out what I was doing/thinking wrong! :)

The repetition in the first part of 'DVD Rentals' idk made me think that it is a firm or a brand which was loosing a market of 10 mill Rentals due to the launch of Webflix. If that where the case, I saw the idea that Webflix made a rental of more than 4 mill and a sale of 4 mill, explaining the 10 mill discrepancy of the firm 'DVD Rental' and its slump in 2012! This is the reason why [A] and [E] looked really similar to me :) I was thinking that the market lost by 'DVD rentals' was being gained by Webflix and it could be explained by [A]. But in actual, the statement [A] simply stated a gain in the rental number in Webflix but did not explain the general decrease in the rental market.

Silly me! :) anyways! thanks for the explanation BlueLagoon! :) *Kudos*

Regards,
A

I have the same logi as you do. Still I can not understand BlueLagoon's logic :( could you explain.

Max states that rental business didn't declined because of Webflix. We must weaken it.

A states that, the DVD rental business declines 10M because of Weblix.

E states that the decline is due to people2people rentals. I think it even strengthens Max's argument

Josh
10 million fewer DVD rentals in 2012 --> reduction because of Webflix.

Maxwell
Webflix sold only 4 million DVDs in 2012 --> reduction cannot be because of Webflix.

We have been asked to weaken Maxwell's argument; i.e. any answer option that states that reduction in DVD rentals did occur because of the launch of Webflix will be the correct answer.

A - incorrect.
Even if it rented out 5 million or more DVDs, the overall rentals for 2012 (including those from Webflix) were 10 million fewer.
this answer option then does not weaken Maxwell's conclusion that Reduction cannot be because of Webflix.

B - Does not change the fact that overall DVD rentals for 2012 were 10 million fewer (including those from Webflix and 2 new stores).
So, this answer option does not weaken Maxwell's conclusion that Reduction cannot be because of Webflix.

C - does not have any impact on Maxwell's conclusion.

D - not relevant. does not have any impact on Maxwell's conclusion.

E - correct answer. This answer explains the remaining 6 million out of 10 million. (4 million of these were sold by Webflix).
Out of the 4 million DVDs that were sold in 2012, many were loaned by people to their friends.
This weakens Maxwell's argument that Reduction was not because of Webflix.

Basically, (some people like me and others who got this questions wrong) I was trying to weaken Maxwell's argument. However, if you read carefully, the question stem is asking you to weaken Josh's argument that the entry of Webflix is not a reason why DVD rentals declined. However, Maxwell is clearly saying "There must be another explanation" Yet, Maxwell is confirming only 4 million DVDs were "SOLD" by web fix. This question is comparing apples to oranges. Also, if you analyzed the question, there will be a gap of 10 million - 4 million = 6 million in which I believe nobody purchased or rented. Could there be a reason as to why 6 million did not rent or buy a DVD?

There must be the case that DVD owner's loaned their DVDs to their friends!

Maxwell's argument is - There must be another explanation of decline of dvd rental.
This must be weakened.

(E)People who own DVDs frequently loan them to their friends.
weakens the argument
