The key idea here is "details of the plot". This refers to the events, twists and turns in the plot, which is a component of the spirit and intention the (author of a) novel tries to convey. However, E is quite better as it directly relates to the main question. So, essentially "true meaning and intention" is closer to "spirit" than "details of plot".
