A) reflect the director's original interpretation of the main themes of the novel.---Movie must reflect the original plots or themes , but According to his/her sense of understanding, Director may interpret the novel plot different also...in that case movie will loose its originality. So A cannot be the assumption .

Several movie versions of Charles Dickens' Tale of Two Cities have been made. The original movie version made in 1939 is the best because it is closest in spirit to the original novel.
An underlying assumption of the argument above is that a movie based on a novel should:

A) reflect the director's original interpretation of the main themes of the novel.
B) accurately depict the time and place in which the novel is set.
C) feature actors and actresses who closely resemble the characters in the novel both in body and spirit.
D) faithfully render the details of the plot from the narrator's point of view.
E) capture the true meaning and intention of the novel.

A) reflect the director's original interpretation of the main themes of the novel. Not of director's but of novel's.
B) accurately depict the time and place in which the novel is set. Time and place not equal to spirit of the novel. May be slightly
C) feature actors and actresses who closely resemble the characters in the novel both in body and spirit. not so important.
D) faithfully render the details of the plot from the narrator's point of view. Close one but let's check the last answer choice.
E) capture the true meaning and intention of the novel. perfect

I choose option E because "the true meaning and intention of the novel" can be captured by other movie versions too.
What makes the Original Movie the best is how close/detailed it is w.r.t the novel.
So selected option D.
Kindly help with my doubt.

D talks about NARRATOR’S point of view.
The assumption however is the AUTHOR’S point of view.
