Linguist: Some people have understood certain studies as showing that bilingual children have a reduced “conceptual map” because bilingualism overstresses the child’s linguistic capacities. Vocabulary tests taken by bilingual children appear to show that these children tend to have a smaller vocabulary than do most children of the same age group. I think the answer is E. The technique used to obtain the purported evidence of a problem with bilingualism is giving children tests in a single language, which the author pointed at as a methodological error.

In this passage, the author is trying to point out a flaw in the reasoning of people. The passage tells that people generally conclude that bilingualism gives a "conceptual gap" as it overstresses a child's linguistic capacities. Here the overstressing factor is the cause of the peoples' conclusion. But the author is not trying to negate the reason for their conclusion, but he is trying to show that the studies are flawed from which people are concluding. He exemplifies the flaw in the test pattern.

So, we can go for the option E and reject B.

ha ha - I will not argue because i agree with your logic. I re-read the passage today and it completely makes sense -
there is a cause and effect mentioned in passage ,and as per linguist there is no causal relation or to be precise effect is not there at all. So linguist is not saying that the cause is not there , may be cause is there but it has nothing to do with the effect.

Answer is E. B is close but we can reject B since author is not citing any inconsistency. Infact he is theoretically putting that how any method is drawing wrong result
