Theorist: Hatred and anger, grief and despair, love and joy are pairs of emotions that consist of the same core feeling and are distinguishable from each other only in terms of the social conditions that cause them and the behavior they in turn causes. So even if the meaning of a given piece of music is the emotion it elicits, this can mean only that music produces the core of a given emotion, for music is merely sound and, therefore, by itself creates neither social conditions nor human behavior.

The claim that music is merely sound plays which one of the following roles in the theorist's argument?

(A) It is a generalization a particular instance of which is cited by the argument in order to undermine the viewpoint that the argument is attacking.

(B) It is a portion of the conclusion drawn in the argument.

(C) It is a claim that is offered as partial support for the argument's conclusion.

(D) It is a generalization the truth of which is claimed to be necessary to establish the conclusion of the argument.

(E) It is a hypothesis that must be rejected, according to the argument, because it is inconsistent with certain evidence.

LSAT

This is what my note looks like:
Claim -> condition + conclusion -> reason 2 support conclusion (trigger word: for)

POE
Music is merely sound, by no means this is a generalization, hence A & D out
E: it might be a hypothesis, but the argument doesnt reject this but need it to support the conclusion
B: it is a premise going in the same direction with the conclusion, it is not a portion of the conclusion (seem weird to me, a conclusion is a conclusion, what is it with the 'portion of conclusion' thing)
C: make sense, a claim, and support the conclusion

Can someone help me on the reason to eliminate D? My last two options under contention through process of elimination were C. & D.

This can mean only that music produces the core of a given emotion, for music is merely sound and, therefore, by itself creates neither social conditions nor human behavior. When a phrase is set off by commas within a sentence, it typically serves as a non-restrictive or non-essential element. This means that the phrase adds extra information, but the main meaning of the sentence would remain clear and complete without it. However, calling it "not important" might be an oversimplification. The phrase can still provide valuable context, details, or emphasis, but it is not essential for the basic understanding of the sentence and thereby does not depend on the same to be inferred i.e. not necessary.
