HAPPYatHARVARD: Yes , even if many new products fails , there is no guarantee that this product will also fail. So this choice does not weaken the argument.

Zac123 option says a generic statement which may or may not be applicable to the said product/ business / company so its not an option to even think about

Drug company manager: Our newest product is just not selling. One way to save it would be a new marketing campaign. This would not guarantee success, but it is one chance to save the product, so we should try it.

Which one of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the manager’s argument?

(A) The drug company has invested heavily in its newest product, and losses due to this product would be harmful to the company’s profits.
(B) Many new products fail whether or not they are supported by marketing campaigns.
(C) The drug company should not undertake a new marketing campaign for its newest product if the campaign has no chance to succeed.
(D) Undertaking a new marketing campaign would endanger the drug company’s overall position by necessitating cutbacks in existing marketing campaigns.
(E) Consumer demand for the drug company’s other products has been strong in the time since the company’s newest product was introduced.
Clean (D) If the proposed plan of action is doesn't guarantee expected return/results then Investment in that programme would be detrimental to the Interest of the COmpany , as such thr suggested course of action may not be adopted.

But isn't option D talking about effects on other marketing campaign. It doesn't mention anything about the new product.

How I took this CRQ is as below.

(A) The drug company has invested heavily in its newest product, and losses due to this product would be harmful to the company’s profits.
And if a market campaign has any chance of saving this product, company can try at least. Strengthener.

(B) Many new products fail whether or not they are supported by marketing campaigns.
We are worried about product mentioned in stimuli, not in many products. Irrelevant.

(C) The drug company should not undertake a new marketing campaign for its newest product if the campaign has no chance to succeed.
This is kind of assertion, not a logical weakener. Moreover, although it has no guarantee of success but chances to save the product still exist through this campaign.

(D) Undertaking a new marketing campaign would endanger the drug company’s overall position by necessitating cutbacks in existing marketing campaigns.
Market campaign will endanger company's overall position and also cuts in existing market campaign. We already no there is no guarantee of success. Overall, this campaign will negatively impact company's overall value.
Weakener.

(E) Consumer demand for the drug company’s other products has been strong in the time since the company’s newest product was introduced.
Profit from other products can be invested in market campaign of new product. Strengthener.

D is correct weakener.

No We still would not go for B because , as stated by srtas its still a very generic statement which may include anything thing other than a new drug . But we are only concerned with marketing of new drug.
Hope this helps.

These are the rules for CR
-Try to avoid extreme answers in CR. (Must, should, only etc...)
-Most of them, Some people , Many etc..Be cautious because we don't what percentage of the people or group are some, many or most referred to.

I thought in gmat we must no be aware of other factors involved, like in this case with ans. D we are concerned about the well being of the company while ans. C focuses on the new product only.

DmitryFarber Thanks Dmitry for correcting me. You are right, extreme answers are helpful in strengthening and weakening questions. We can negate extreme answers only in main point, inference and conclusion based questions.

The product is not working so one way to increase the sales is launch a new campaign. Now, that is a great idea but what if there are many campaigns already running and adding a new campaign would not make much difference or may bring in losses instead of bringing profits.

Option D clearly states that and hence becomes our correct answer.

Hi experts GMATNinja VeritasKarishma can you please explain this.

My Thinking: After studying the argument, I thought that there is no consumer demand for the New Product, So irrespective of how much we campaign it will be unsuccessful Since consumer demand is less.

As the same marketing strategy works for all other products of this drug company, Why should we rethink the Marketing Strategy??

Hence I picked option E, I got confused b/w D,E

HarshaBujji, you can't just expect consumer demand to exist, you might have to create it. A marketing campaign might be one of the many ways to increase demand. Option E is incorrect because it does not say anything about the product in discussion. Also, I'm not sure where you get the highlight portion from, I couldn't find it anywhere in the question.

(E) Consumer demand for the drug company’s other products has been strong in the time since the company’s newest product was introduced.

New product is not selling.
A new marketing campaign could increase its sale.

Conclusion: We should try a new marketing campaign.

What weakens the manager's conclusion that the company should try the new campaign? If there is some reason that the new campaign may overall worsen the company's situation (either more costly than the sales it will bring in, or harmful to other product sales etc), then we should not try the new campaign. So we need to find something that says that the new campaign may not be a good idea.

(A) The drug company has invested heavily in its newest product, and losses due to this product would be harmful to the company’s profits.

This only furthers the case for the new campaign. Not correct.

(B) Many new products fail whether or not they are supported by marketing campaigns.

Irrelevant.

(C) The drug company should not undertake a new marketing campaign for its newest product if the campaign has no chance to succeed.

We know that it has some chance of success.

(D) Undertaking a new marketing campaign would endanger the drug company’s overall position by necessitating cutbacks in existing marketing campaigns.

Correct. The new campaign could be harmful to the overall position of the company. So overall impact may not be positive. This weakens the case for the new campaign.

(E) Consumer demand for the drug company’s other products has been strong in the time since the company’s newest product was introduced.

The new product is not selling but other products are selling. This is not against trying the new campaign. Perhaps the current campaign is doing a good job with other products but perhaps the new campaign will do something additional which will do a good job for the new product too. There is nothing that implies here that the new campaign will not be good enough for the other products. Or perhaps the other products are selling irrespective of whether a campaign is on or not - we don't know. Option (D) clearly tells us that the new campaign will endanger the company's overall position.

Answer (D)

first, it is important to understand what needs to be weakened in the question.
it is: the new campaign

A: doesn't talk of the new campaign at all
B: neither weakens nor strengthens, a general statement
C: no chance to succeed, we cant say that; there are still some chances to succeed
D: BEST CHOICE
E: shows that the current campaign is doing good but doesn't weaken the new campaign argument
