Nowhere in the question they have mentioned productivity question. So even if they have surplus communication, they are communicating using faster methods. C is not an appropriate answer to the question. Can someone please explain?

Hi....

Here is how I would go about solving this question (although it does rely heavily on understanding the meaning of "efficiently"):

ANALYSIS of STIMULUS

A very important part of solving this question is identifying the conclusion of the passage.

The conclusion is the claim: Businesses now communicate MORE EFFICIENTLY than they ever have before.
Supporting reason: Wireless phone, Internet, and email technology presently allow quicker correspondence.

PRE-THINKING

1. The claim is communication is more efficient. What does this actually mean?
2. What does “efficiently” imply? Per the dictionary, it implies “work done in a way that achieves maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense”. (And this is how the issue of productivity comes into the picture)
3. So here, “more efficient communication” means communication carried out in a way that achieves maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense.
4. For “minimum wasted effort or expense”, it must be true that the use of advanced digital technology itself is not leading to more wasted effort or expense regarding correspondence- a hindrance to that efficient communication.
5. Thus, the assumption is: The use of wireless phone, etc is not adding significantly to any wasted effort and expense (translate “wasted” as unnecessary correspondence that takes up time)
6. Answer choice C is along the lines of this pre-thinking.

Hope this helps :)
