Publisher: The new year is approaching, and with it the seasonal demand for books on exercise and fitness. We must do whatever it takes to ship books in that category on time; our competitors have demonstrated a high level of organization, and we cannot afford to be outsold.
Which one of the following most accurately expresses the main conclusion drawn in the publisher’s argument?
(A) The company should make shipping books its highest priority.
(B) By increasing its efficiency, the company can maintain its competitive edge.
(C) The company will be outsold if it does not maintain its competitors’ high level of organization.
(D) It is imperative that the company ship fitness and exercise books on time.
(E) The company should do whatever is required in order to adopt its competitors’ shipping practices.
The conclusion is what the author wants to say using the argument. It is his one main point. Here, what does the publisher want to say? If you had to write it in one sentence, what would that sentence be?
"We must ship books on exercise and fitness on time."
Rest everything he says is to support why they should ship these books on time - the season is approaching, our competitors are highly organised, we cannot afford to be outsold.
The main point is not to say that the company will be outsold otherwise; the main point is to say that ship those books on time. So (C) is not correct. (D) is.
(A) doesn't work either because we cannot say "highest priority". Perhaps security of the store is the highest priority or something else.
Answer (D)
by that explanation so option A becomes more of an assumption than conclusion right?(this way the option was eliminated)
