Legal commentator: The goal of a recently enacted law that bans smoking in workplaces is to protect employees from secondhand smoke. But the law is written in such a way that it cannot be interpreted as ever prohibiting people from smoking in their own homes.

The statements above, if true, provide a basis for rejecting which one of the following claims?

(A) The law will be interpreted in a way that is inconsistent with the intentions of the legislators who supported it.

(B) Supporters of the law believe that it will have a significant impact on the health of many workers.

(C) The law offers no protection from secondhand smoke for people outside of their workplaces.

(D) Most people believe that smokers have a fundamental right to smoke in their own homes.

(E) The law will protect domestic workers such as housecleaners from secondhand smoke in their workplaces.

Let's unpack the question stem. Note that the second sentence in the stem is negatively worded to cause confusion. Translated:

"A recent law will protect workers from second hand smoke. However, the wording of the law implies that there are cases where the law does permit people to smoke inside their homes."

We are asked to choose the option that will correctly reject a claim.

Option E claims that domestic workers such as housecleaners will be protected from second hand smoke in their workplaces.

But according to the law, these workers will NOT be protected. Why? Because for these workers, their workplaces are people's homes. And according to the law, people can continue to smoke inside their homes.

Therefore, (E) makes a wrong claim and hence must be rejected. This is the correct answer.

(C) is an irrelevant claim as it refers to what would happen to people outside their workplaces. There is nothing in the law that refers to these cases.

This is an odd 'evaluate the argument question'. Is this stylistic of GMAT?

I got with Option C, there would be no protection to workers outside workplace

Yes the claim in option 'C' is correct can NOT be rejected. Question is asking for a thing that can be rejected.
I too got it wrong, by the way. The explanations made sense to me.

Goodqs- understand the qs that what can be rejected by the conclusion, only option E matches thepoint of household and safety , rest all are out of scope.
