Hello connections,

Why are we mixing up basic and efficient, Something that is basic might not be efficient...So the list seems not to be accurate. With the similar principle, they might be other ways, but they are not the basic way, so the list seems to be exhaustive as well

How can we say that reviewer is saying that the three basic ways are possibly inaccurate? He just presented that there are other ways too. Certainly not exhaustive is fine but "possibly inaccurate"—I am not convinced. Can anyone please clear the confusion?

From a book review: The authors blithely claim that there are “three basic ways to store energy: as heat, as electricity, or as kinetic energy.” However, I cannot call to mind any effective ways to store energy as electricity, whereas any capable student of physics could readily suggest a few more ways to store energy:
chemical, gravitational, nuclear.

The reviewer makes which one of the following criticisms of a claim that appears in the book under review?

(A) There is no reason to consider any particular way to store energy any more basic than any other.

(B) The list given of ways to store energy is possibly inaccurate and certainly not exhaustive.

(C) It is overly limiting to treat basic ways to store energy as a question unrelated to the question of effective ways to use energy.

(D) What needs to be considered is not whether various ways to store energy are basic but whether they are effective.

(E) Except possibly for electricity, all ways to store energy are equally effective and therefore equally basic.

The answer is in the passage. The passage is hard. I had to read it 3 times to actually get what it said as it did not make sense. This is an LSAT question, so you have to put a lot more effort than on the GMAT where you would not encounter this level of density in the text (usually) but this is a great practice to challenge our "relaxed CR brains".

If you read the text carefully, you will see that the sentence "However i cannot call to mind any effective way to store energy as electricity" is one part which basically means, the authors said there 3 ways but one of those way is no good, so they basically claim electricity is a way to store energy whereas in reality it is not. Strike 1.

The second part of the sentence "whereas any capable student.... " tells us that there are more ways to store energy, which the book authors missed - second strike against them.

Thus the book authors made 2 mistakes: 1) they included an incorrect way of storing energy and 2) they did not include some valid ways of storing energy.

Thus the answer is (B) The list given of ways to store energy is possibly inaccurate and certainly not exhaustive.

bb Thanks for the clarification. I falter because of the word "possibly incorrect".

You should not because it is standard gmat/lsat terminology. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, that means you’re not familiar enough with the terminology. The passage will never say “ absolutely indisputably and certainly incorrect” and if it does say that, that’s incorrect answer.
