"in still-life painting, the artist INVARIABLY chooses, modifies, and arranges the objects to be painted. Thus, the artist has considerably more control over the composition."

The author specifically mentions that an artist always chooses to "choose, modifies, and arranges the objects to be painted". I actually don't see the donwn side of the use of extreme word "the only way" in option B, since, apparently, the artist invariably does that.

Any thoughts why B is wrong?

I ruled out B because of a key word : "only"

(B) The only way in which artists control the composition and subject of a painting is by choosing, modifying, and arranging the objects to be represented in that painting. X

We don't know whether the ONLY way artists control the composition and subject is by choosing, modifying...

You are right.
If X leads to Y
and X is the only reason to make Y then it is strengthening. So we can't reject based on "only" factor

Only in option could be an high alert but it is better to look for other reasons as you queried.
Here are other reasons: ( i have updated above post)
(B) The only way in which artists control the composition and subject of a painting is by choosing, modifying, and arranging the objects to be represented in that painting.
Alert: We don’t know if there are other factors that leads to C
Reject1: Which painting - representational, non-representational , still-life? The point is very open. It doesn't say all paintings, it talks about a painting only.
Reject2: The conclusion is based on comparison of 2 paintings . This option doesn't add value to the information what we are looking for . ( we are looking to support : what can make more control over the composition and subject of a still-life painting than over those of a landscape painting or portrait)

Hope it helps.

I struggled with this question before arriving at the right answer. I don't think any of the answers address the key issues here, so I am posting my thought - process here.

Art historian: More than any other genre of representational painting, still-life painting lends itself naturally to art whose goal is the artist’s self-expression, rather than merely the reflection of a preexisting external reality. This is because in still-life painting, the artist invariably chooses, modifies, and arranges the objects to be painted. Thus, the artist has considerably more control over the composition and subject of a still-life painting than over those of a landscape painting or portrait, for example.

(A) Landscape painting and portraiture are the artistic genres that lend themselves most naturally to the mere reflection of a preexisting external reality.
>>>>Landscape painting and portraiture could be a way to resemble the mere reflection of a preexisting external reality. But is it the most natural way? Are we saying that no other forms are as good as LPP in this concept. Out

(B) The only way in which artists control the composition and subject of a painting is by choosing, modifying, and arranging the objects to be represented in that painting.
>>>>"Only" should hit your ears as soon as you read it. Passage says "its a way". We dont know if "its the only way"

(C) Nonrepresentational painting does not lend itself as naturally as still-life painting does to the goal of the artist’s self-expression.
>>>>Nonrepresentational painting is OUT OF CONTEXT

(D) In genres of representational painting other than still-life painting, the artist does not always choose, modify, and arrange the objects to be painted.
>>>>They sometimes do(still life paintings), sometimes don't(landspace painting). Correct

(E) When painting a portrait, artists rarely attempt to express themselves through the choice, modification, or arrangement of the background elements against which the subject of the portrait is painted.

>>>>No idea about about artist's attempts are mentioned. Out
