The Big-Hype marketing firm is experiencing rapid growth. To keep pace with the growing number of clients, employees in the creative department are encouraged to help employees in the administrative department. This strategy is maintained despite the fact that administrative work is now always completed on schedule whereas the creative work is often unsatisfactory.

Which of the following inferences is best supported by the statement made above?

A. Employees in the creative department are incapable of helping those in the administrative department.

B. The Big-Hype marketing firm will soon be out of business.

C. The Big-Hype marketing firm places more focus on administrative work than on creative work.

D. The administrative department has more time to complete its work than the creative department has.

E. The more clients a marketing firm serves, the less satisfactory its creative work is.

A. If creative department employees are incapable of helping those in the administrative department then the administrative department might not complete work on schedule. So, eliminate this choice.

B. We can't surely infer that the Big-Hype marketing firm will run out of business. As there's no information given on relation between creative work and business the get from it. So even this choice can be eliminated

C. Based on the last statement mentioned in the argument i.e. This strategy is maintained despite.... , shows that the firm is more focused on admin work. So this can be inferred.

D. In the sentence, it is mentioned that the Admin department was able to complete work on schedule with the support of creative department. This means they don't have more time to work. Eliminate this choice as well.

E. It was stated in the argument that creative work became less satisfactory after the creative department is encouraged to support the Admin department. So, more number/increasing number of clients can't make work unsatisfactory.

So the answer is Choice "C"

For inferences question: We will make sure the correct option can not be argued.

In Short, as business grows, creative department is encourage to support admin department despite admin is always completed on time whereas creative work is often unsatisfactory.

A. Employees in the creative department are incapable of helping those in the administrative department.
Not necessary: It is only given that they are encouraged to support admin department. It is true that creative work is often unsatisfactory but it may be possible that they spend more efforts on admin department due to strategy. Their capability can be argued in positive side or negative side.

B. The Big-Hype marketing firm will soon be out of business.
Reject: Maybe this strategy will continue to work by focusing on admin department. It maybe possible that they have only few big clients who are very much satisfied with the work as compared to large number of non satisfied clients. In this situation , they may not go out of business.

C. The Big-Hype marketing firm places more focus on administrative work than on creative work.
Correct: The strategy is maintained inspite of admin work is completed on time. It seems admin focus more attention on admin work. Hence seems this option can not be argue. Hence correct

D. The administrative department has more time to complete its work than the creative department has.
Irrelevant: time factor is not at all mentioned. It may be possible that admin department needs less time and still finish on time as compared to creative department.

E. The more clients a marketing firm serves, the less satisfactory its creative work is.
Reject: It can be argued that the satisfactory level is saturated after certain number of clients. After this threshold number, more clients a market firm server, the satisfactory level remain same.

Note:This is an inference-based problem and not a "resolve the paradox" problem.
Thus,
- We are not supposed to bring i additional piece of information to "reconcile" the perceived unusualness.
- We need to infer from the details provided even if the unusualness is not explained.

Let's see the choices -

C. The Big-Hype marketing firm places more focus on administrative work than on creative work.
This choice is actually trying to "explain" the reason why the Big-Hype stands with its strategy.
This choice would have been correct for if the problem is to "resolve the paradox".
But, we can't infer from the information provided in the stimulus that the firm places "more focus" on something.

I don't see any choice that can be "inferred" from the given information.

AndrewN VeritasKarishma - May I request you with a better approach?
Hello, Sumi1010. First off, whenever you do not come to a satisfactory answer after a pass through the answer choices, you ought to consider rereading the question stem. In this case, we see that we are tasked with finding one inference from among the five provided that is best supported by the passage. I think you are splitting hairs between one question label and another, creating a distinction that need not be brought to bear in the question. The word inferences in the question stem could just as easily be statements. That said, upon reading the passage, you might reasonably wonder why the firm continues to encourage employees in the creative department... to help employees in the administrative department, despite the fact that creative work is often unsatisfactory. That is all. Stick to these considerations, and I think the question will prove much more manageable.

Finally, and you may be growing tired of my saying so, but take third-party questions with a grain of salt. Official questions are the only ones that must be taken as is (even if, on rare occasions, GMAC™ has admitted to letting a flawed question or two slip through the cracks).

I hope that helps. As always, good luck with your studies. Thank you for thinking to ask me about this one.

- Andrew

Which of the following inferences is best supported by the statement made above?
Analysis: inferences best supported by the statement made = Which of the following Option can be best concluded?
This means we have to find a conclusion and not look for anything to add to the above statements.

A. Employees in the creative department are incapable of helping those in the administrative department. -- From the statement it seems 'administrative work is now always completed on schedule' which can mean that creative department is capable. Drop Option A.

B. The Big-Hype marketing firm will soon be out of business. -- Cannot be inferred from the statements. Drop Option B.

C. The Big-Hype marketing firm places more focus on administrative work than on creative work. -- From the statement 'This strategy is maintained despite the fact...' Option C can certainly be inferred. Keep Option C.

D. The administrative department has more time to complete its work than the creative department has. -- 'administrative work is now always completed on schedule' cannot be inferred as Option D. Drop Option D.

E. The more clients a marketing firm serves, the less satisfactory its creative work is. -- Trap Answer - Notice that Option E is a general statement. Whereas, in the above statements it's mentioned that creative work is often unsatisfactory because creative are currently encouraged to help employees in the administrative department. Thus the general statement in Option E cannot be inferred from the statements. Drop Option B.

Answer should be Option C.

B. The Big-Hype marketing firm will soon be out of business. -> Irrelevant.

C. The Big-Hype marketing firm places more focus on administrative work than on creative work. -> putting more people in administrative work hints for company's focus area. I would like to keep it.

D. The administrative department has more time to complete its work than the creative department has. -> more time is tough to say. Incorrect.

E. The more clients a marketing firm serves, the less satisfactory its creative work is. -> Incorrect. We are not talking about more clients.

So, I think C. :)

E. The more clients a marketing firm serves, the less satisfactory its creative work is.

At Big-Hype, admin work is completed on time but creative work is unsatisfactory.
Still, the strategy is that employees in the creative department are encouraged to help employees in the administrative department.

What can we infer? That the company places more value on the completion of admin work than on creative work. Even though creative work is lagging, employees of that dept are encouraged to help in admin work. So looks like the company wants that the admin work must get done, even if the creative work suffers.

A. Employees in the creative department are incapable of helping those in the administrative department.
Not implied.

B. The Big-Hype marketing firm will soon be out of business.
Nothing known that supports this. We are not given that companies whose creative work is unsatisfactory go out of business.

C. The Big-Hype marketing firm places more focus on administrative work than on creative work.
Correct. This is the best supported inference.

D. The administrative department has more time to complete its work than the creative department has.
Unknown. We don't know who gets more time to complete.

E. The more clients a marketing firm serves, the less satisfactory its creative work is.
We cannot infer a general statement based on what happens in one company. In any case, this is not supported by the argument of Big-Hype either.
