Joe's lumber has 2 options - oak and pine.

Given a choice, Roberto never uses pine

When Roberto built a table then he got the wood from Joe's lumber. So, he must have used Oak.

We have to look for an option where there are two choices available and one choice is almost always preferred over the other one.

(A) Rocky wants to go with three friends to the amusement park. His father owns both a sedan and a compact. The compact holds four people, but even though the sedan’s engine has more horsepower, if Rocky borrows a car from his father he will borrow the compact.

Here, Rocky has no option to use a Sedan since it can not accommodate 4 people. This is not on the same lines as given in the question stem.

(B) The Roddick Corporation offers Pedzisai a choice between an assignment in Sweden and an assignment in South Africa. Pedzisai would never accept an assignment in his home country of South Africa if it meant turning down an assignment in Europe, so if he chooses an assignment it must be the assignment in Sweden.

This looks fine

(C) If Georgia wants to ride her bike from her apartment to work she must either take a thoroughfare or go through a maze of neighborhoods. The neighborhood streets are always full of potholes and the thoroughfare has too much traffic, so she never rides her bike to work.

Here two choices are given but both the choices have been rejected.

(D) Antonio can take a 15-minute break in the morning or an hour and a quarter for lunch later. The haircut Antonio planned takes 30 minutes, but his barber had only morning appointments available, so no matter what Antonio will have to get his haircut another day.

Again, 2 choices were given and not a single choice has been selected.

(E) If the team owner does not fire his coach, his football team will rebel and they will lose more games. Losing the coach will also mean losing more games, so if no alternative solution presents itself, the team will lose more games.

Here two choices are given whether to fire the coach or not. But both the choices presents bad outcome for the team.

IMO OA should be B

I am not sure but I think A looks better.
The stem says X has 2 options(A & B) to take from Y. Since X likes A more and X chooses to buy from Y, X must have chosen A.

In option B, if Pedzisai doesn't choose any assignment from The Roddick Corporation, then the argument doesn't stand.

In option B, if Pedzisai doesn't choose any assignment from The Roddick Corporation, then the argument doesn't stand.

In option A, it's not given whether X likes A more. It's just that due to the circumstance (total 4 people) he has to choose A.

Whereas in Option B, it is clear that X likes A more. This is the best option among the five options.

Hope, it helps.

Joe’s Lumber stocks only two types of 2 × 4 planks, pine and oak. Roberto never uses pine to build his tables because he likes the heavier feel of oak and believes it is more durable. When he built Marion a dining room table he bought the wood from Joe’s Lumber, so the table must be made of oak.

The argument above is most similar in its logical structure to which one of the following?

(A) Rocky wants to go with three friends to the amusement park. His father owns both a sedan and a compact. The compact holds four people, but even though the sedan’s engine has more horsepower, if Rocky borrows a car from his father he will borrow the compact.

(C) If Georgia wants to ride her bike from her apartment to work she must either take a thoroughfare or go through a maze of neighborhoods. The neighborhood streets are always full of potholes and the thoroughfare has too much traffic, so she never rides her bike to work.

(D) Antonio can take a 15-minute break in the morning or an hour and a quarter for lunch later. The haircut Antonio planned takes 30 minutes, but his barber had only morning appointments available, so no matter what Antonio will have to get his haircut another day.

(E) If the team owner does not fire his coach, his football team will rebel and they will lose more games. Losing the coach will also mean losing more games, so if no alternative solution presents itself, the team will lose more games.

Original Argument of the author:

Premises:
Joe stocks only Pine wood and Oak wood.
Roberto never uses Pine wood.
Roberto bought from Joe.

Conclusion:
Roberto used Oak wood.

We need to find a similar argument. It is a valid argument.
There are only two options – A and B. Person never uses A. So, Person used B.

(A) Rocky wants to go with three friends to the amusement park. His father owns both a sedan and a compact. The compact holds four people, but even though the sedan’s engine has more horsepower, if Rocky borrows a car from his father he will borrow the compact.

We have only two options – a compact and a sedan. But we are not given that Rocky will not use one of them. Then we cannot conclude that Rocky will use the other.
This is not the structure of our original argument.

Pedzisai has two options – Sweden and South Africa. He will never go to South Africa if Sweden is available. Hence if he chooses an assignment, he will pick Sweden.
This makes sense and is similar to the structure of our original argument. Correct.

(C) If Georgia wants to ride her bike from her apartment to work she must either take a thoroughfare or go through a maze of neighborhoods. The neighborhood streets are always full of potholes and the thoroughfare has too much traffic, so she never rides her bike to work.

We have two options – ‘thoroughfare’ and ‘a maze of neighborhoods’ but neither is acceptable to Georgia.
This is not the structure of our original argument.

(D) Antonio can take a 15-minute break in the morning or an hour and a quarter for lunch later. The haircut Antonio planned takes 30 minutes, but his barber had only morning appointments available, so no matter what Antonio will have to get his haircut another day.

We again have two options but neither works for Antonio. This is not the structure of our original argument.

(E) If the team owner does not fire his coach, his football team will rebel and they will lose more games. Losing the coach will also mean losing more games, so if no alternative solution presents itself, the team will lose more games.

There are two options but both lead to the same outcome – losing more games. This is not the structure of our original argument.
