30% of major airline companies equip their planes with wireless internet access. 70% of major airlines offer passengers free on-board snacks. What is the greatest possible percentage of major airline companies that offer both wireless internet and free on-board snacks?

A. 21%
B. 30%
C. 40%
D. 50%
E. 70%

30% can be a sub set of 70%, but not other way round.

Therefore 30%.

The greatest possible would be lowest of the two individual values.
No matter how much you increase the pie, you cannot make it more than 30.

How can the probability that both Event A and Event B occur be higher than the individual probabilities of each happening? Therefore, the probability of both events occurring cannot exceed 0.3 (the lower of the two percentages, compared to 70% offering snacks). Can it be exactly 30%? Yes, if all companies with internet also offer snacks, then the companies that offer both will indeed be exactly 30%.

• 30% of airlines equip planes with wireless internet.

• 70% of airlines offer free on-board snacks.

We are looking for the greatest overlap, which occurs when all airlines with wireless internet also offer free snacks.

Key Observation

If all the airlines with wireless internet (30%) also offer free snacks (70%), the greatest possible percentage of overlap will simply be:

Overlap=Percentage with wireless internet=30%.
