Last week Vartan spent 15 percent of his wages on recreation. This week, his wages are 10 percent less than last weekʼs wages and he spent 30 percent of his wages on recreation. The amount he spends on recreation this week is what percent of the amount he spent on recreation last week?

A. 100%
B. 160%
C. 180%
D. 200%
E. 220%

I would ask to Gmatclub if this one is a really tough problem and if this is the standard on real Gmat ...

Thanks

I foten have problem in understanding the base of percentage. any tips?

What this question is testing is the concept of percentage decrease and the application of the formula new-old/ old or you could also you old-new/old

10(.15) - $1.5
10(.9) =$9 dollars in wages this week
$9(.3) = 2.7

2.7-1.5/1.5 = 80% increase which is 180% of the amount he spend last week- don't confuse with a "180% increase" those are two different things. This is more likely a 600 level question.

A. 100%
B. 160%
C. 180%
D. 200%
E. 220%

We can let the total wages last week = 100.

Thus, Varten spent 0.15 x 100 = 15 dollars on recreation last week.

Since his wages this week are 10 percent less than last weekʼs wages, this week’s wages are 0.9 x 100 = 90.

Thus, Varten spent 0.3 x 90 = 27 dollars on recreation this week.

The amount he spends on recreation this week is 27/15 = 9/5 = 1.8 = 180% of the amount he spent on recreation last week.
