Suppose cost price for 1kg of coffee be 100$.
Cost price for 840gm=840*100/1000=84$

Selling price = 100-4= 96$

Profit%=(96-84)*100/84= 12*100/84= 100/7= 14 2/7 %

if 1000g cost him 1000 cents then he sells 1000g for 960cent (4% loss)
but since 840g weight is used instead of 1000g weight, actually 840g are being sold for 960 cents.

so per gram he is earning 960/840 = 1.14 cents
since per gram costed him 1 cent, he is earning a profit of 0.14 cent per gram which is (0.14/1)*100 = 14% gain
