Sure.

Out of 400, some quantity gave 36% profit & remaining gave 24% loss

Now, 24% loss means -24% profit

From here, we got the 1st row of numbers i.e 36 & -24
The Resultant is again a loss of 12% , so profit of -12%; this will come up in the 2nd row

Using rules of alligation; -12 > -24; so substracting:

- 12 - (-24) = -12 + 24 = 12

36 > -12; again substracting:

36 - (-12) = 48

This gives the 3rd row i.e 12 & 48

So, the total (12 + 48) = 60, 48 have given a loss of 24%

So, calculation will be

\(\frac{48}{(12+48)} * 400 = 320\) = Answer = C

Hope this would be helpful :)

Assuming x as part of the rice the trader sells at 24% loss and cost price of rice as 100, the equation representing an overall loss of 12% is

\(136 (1-x) + 76 x = 88\)

Solving for x, we get \(x =\frac{4}{5}\)

Or,\(\frac{4}{5}\) of \(400\)kg \(= 320\) kg

You can use the elimination method. The most closest answers are 320 or 175. If we sell 175kg at 24% loss we will get a profit. Therefore the correct ans is 320. No need for any calculations and you can solve the qn under 1 min.

Mixtures and allegations

1.36 0.76

0.88

0.12 0.48

So the ratio is 0.12/0.48 = 1/4

So 4/5 (400) = 320 kg
