Let No of coins be a & b respectively. Hence Total Number of coins = a+b.

Then: a²-b² = 36(a-b) --> (a-b)(a+b) = 36(a-b) --> a+b=36

Answer D.

Just a thought - would such an easy/ quick question come in the quant part of the GMAT? (I was comparing to even some of the 500 level questions I was doing from the forum)..
