simple use BODMAS rule.- brackets first i.e paranthesis, then ORDERS OF i.e square, roots etc, then DIVISION, MULTIPLICATION, ADDITION , SUBTRACTION.

9∗8÷18÷2 =?

Applying BODMAS: \(\frac{8}{18} = \frac{\frac{4}{9}}{2} = \frac{4 }{18}\)

=> 9 * \(\frac{4}{18}\) = 2

In the absence of parantheses as in this case, the order to be followed is from left to right. So you aren't supposed to start with (18÷2) first. Instead, is supposed to be 8/(18x2).

Still struggling to see why this cannot be 8. Since neither multiplication or division takes precedence over the other, why can't we start from left to right to say (9*8)/18/2?

Still struggling to see why this cannot be 8. Since neither multiplication or division takes precedence over the other, why can't we start from left to right to say (9*8)/18/2?
In your example, (9*8)/18/2, the correct order is:

  • First, multiply: 9*8 = 72.
  • Then, divide: 72/18 = 4.
  • Finally, divide again: 4/2 = 2.

So, the result is 2, not 8.
