Lets say she sales x items so her commission will be : x * 1500*15/100 = 225x
Salary difference is: 85000 - 45000 = 40000

So commission must at least be equal to salary difference i.e. x = 40000/225 = 178 (Approx).
Hence answer is C.

My Take -

let the number of sales be n.
as per question -

85000 <= 45000 + 0.15*1500*n
40000<= 225*n
177.78 <= n

Hence option C

Answer = C) 178

Deficit in new job = 85000 - 45000 = 40000

Sales commission per unit \(= 1500*\frac{15}{100} = 225\)

Minimum sales required \(= \frac{40000}{225} = \frac{1600}{9} = 177.7 \approx{178}\)

Sabrina is contemplating a job switch. She is thinking of leaving her job paying $85,000 per year to accept a sales job paying $45,000 per year plus 15 percent commission for each sale made. If each of her sales is for $1,500, what is the least number of sales she must make per year if she is not to lose money because of the job change?

A) 57
B) 177
C) 178
D) 377
E) 378

Kudos for a correct solution.

Let n represent the least number of sales she makes for the year. We can create the equation:

85,000 = 45,000 + 0.15(1,500n)

40,000 = 0.15(1,500n)

40,000 = 225n

177.78 = n

So she must make at least 178 sales.
