Tough and Tricky questions: Word Problems.
Hammers and wrenches are manufactured at a uniform weight per hammer and a uniform weight per wrench. If the total weight of two hammers and three wrenches is one-third that of 8 hammers and 5 wrenches, then the total weight of one wrench is how many times that of one hammer?
A) 1/2
B) 2/3
C) 1
D) 3/2
E) 2

x be the weight of a hammer and y be the weight of a wrench.
(2x+3y)=1/3*(8x+5y)
3(2x+3y)=(8x+5y)
6x+9y=8x+5y
4y=2x
y=x/2
Ans - A

Let's set up an equation with h = hammer weight and w = wrench weight.
We know that 2h + 3w = 1/3*(8h + 5w) and we'll multiply through by 3 to get
6h + 9w = 8h + 5w
4w = 2h or the wrench weighs half as much as the hammer. Choice A
