If x is actual price then,
(x * 1.1)*1.2 = 264
(x * 1.1)*1.2 = 24 * 11
x = 20*10 = 200

Let x be the actual price of the meal before tax and tip
264 = 120% of ( x + 10% tax)
= 120% of (1.1x)
= 1.2(1.1x)
= 1.32x

x = 264/1.32 = 26400/132 = 200

consider price of the meal as x dollars
after a 10% sales tax addition price becomes 1.1*x
finally after a 20% tip on this amount it becomes 1.2*1.1*x = 1.32x
but this amount is given as $264
1.32x = 264
x = 200
Correct Answer - B

This can be solved using the following formula:

1.1x+0.20(1.1x) = 264

You'll find x = 200

A couple spent $264 in total while dining out and paid this amount using a credit card. The $264 figure included a 20 percent tip which was paid on top of the price of the food which already included a sales tax of 10 percent. What was the actual price of the meal before tax and tip?

A) $184
B) $200
C) $204
D) $216
E) $232

Food Bill = 100 (Say)
Sales Tax = 10
Food Bill + Tax = 110
Tip = 22
Food Bill + Tax + Tip = 132

So, When (Food Bill + Tax + Tip) is 132 , food bill is 100

Or, When (Food Bill + Tax + Tip) is 264 , food bill is \(\frac{100}{132}*264\) = 200

Hence answer will be (B)

(264x0.80)(10/11)
By this well get the amount without tip and then without tax.

Given: Total Price: $264, Sales Tax: 10% on food bill, Tip:20% of Food bill(+tax)

Assume Price before tax and tip = x

Equation: 1.2(1.1(x)) = 264

On Solving, We get x = 200

Option B!

Actual price = Tk.x
Or, (120/100)*110/100)*x = 264
Or, (6/5)(11/10)*x =264
x = 264(5/6)(10/11)
x = 200(B)

Letting P = the cost of the meal, we can create the equation:

264 = 1.2 x 1.1 x P

264 = 1.32P

200 = P

Basically \( 264 / (1.2*1.1)\)
\((246*10*10)/(12*11)\)
That gives us 200.

Note : Multiplication is cumulative. So it doesn't matter if you increase 10% first or 20% first.

x + .2x = 264
264 / 1.2x = 220 (price before tip)

x + .1x = 220
220 / 1.1x = 200 (price before tax and tip)

\(\frac{120}{100}\) (Food price * \(\frac{110}{100}\)) = 264

=> \(\frac{132}{100}\) * Food price = 264

=> Food price = 200

Initial cost = X
Cost after 20% tip = 20X/100 + X
Cost after 10% VAT = 2X/100 + X/10

20X/100 + 100X/100 + 2X/100 + 10X/100 = 132X/100

Now we know that the total cost after the tip and the VAT is $264

So let’s make another equation,
132X/100 = 264
Now solve for X,
132X = 26400
X = 26400/132
X = 200
Therefore,
The initial cost and also the answer is $200

Option B
