A tourist does not have to pay tax on the first $600 of goods he purchases in Country B, but does have to pay a 9 percent tax on the portion of the total value that is in excess of $600. What tax must be paid by a tourist if he buys goods with a total value of $1720?

A. $54.00
B. $64.80
C. $90.00
D. $100.80
E. $154.80

Kudos for a correct solution.

Answer = 0.9*(1720-600) = 100.8.

D.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION

Correct Answer: D

The tourist must pay tax on $1720 - $600 = $1120. Thus, the amount of tax he has to pay is 0.09 ($1120) = $100.80. The correct answer is D.

Given that tourist spends: $1720
Tax is exempted on the 1st $600

1720 - 600 = 1120

now to calculate the answer with out using paper and pen use the following method

9 % of 1000 = 90
9 % of 100 = 9

total 99 (without adding 9 % of 20, Even if you add it will got go beyond 105)

So options A, B, C and E can dropped.

D is the Answer
