I used brutal force method and got the answer. If "y" is a yellow dot and "b" is a blue dot than we have a following combinations. yyy, bbb, ybb, byb, bby, yyb, byy, yby. Hence answer is D

Hi All,

This question is a variation on the traditional "coin-flip" question. Each dot has 2 options (the same way that a coin has two sides) and we're asked to deal with arranging 3 dots (the same way that we would be asked to deal with 3 coin flips).

Since each dot has 2 options, there are (2)(2)(2) = 8 different options of 3 dots.

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

A "word" is defined as a sequence of three dots arranged in a row. Each dot is colored either yellow or blue. How many distinct words can be formed?

A 3
B 5
C 6
D 8
E 9

I know it is a question on permutations but the problem is that for me it is a tricky question.

Thank you in advance

There are 3 dots. Each dot can be coloured in 2 ways either Y or B.
So, total number of distinct words = 2*2*2 = 8

Answer D
