10 consecutive numbers ...
lets have x , x+1, x+2 and so on till x+9 ... sum of which gives 10x +45
also in the question it is given ..
10x + 45 =120
i.e sum of these 10 terms to be 120
now 45 is subtracted from this 120 we are then left with 75 ,
though the total number of terms remain 10
The new average thus -- 75/10 =7.5

correct is it ?

Sine the set has consecutive integers, it means (F+L)/2 = 12 i.e, F+L = 24 ........(1)
"F" stands for First number
"L" stands for Last number
The second statements substracts the number in such a way that the resulted set will again consists of consecutive numbers. But now "F" will be F-9 and "L" will remain same.
Since its consecutive integer set, A (New Average) = ((F-9)+L)/2 i.e, 2A = F+L-9......(2).
Substitute F+L value from equation (1) and you will get A = 7.5

Hi All,

The only 'issue' with this question is the use of the word 'consecutive' - if you IGNORE that word, then you can proceed with the question normally. As it stands, the 10 numbers involved do NOT need to be consecutive NOR do they even need to be integers - the two facts (10 numbers and an average of 12) is enough for you to proceed with the rest of the question and get the correct answer.
