relative distance =45 miles
relative speed =4+5 =9 miles per hour
time taken =45/9=5 hours
distance travelled by sam =5*5=25 miles
relative speed =4+5 =9 miles per hour
time taken =45/9=5 hours
distance travelled by sam =5*5=25 miles

This question tests your knowledge about relative speeds and distance.
If two persons/vehicles are moving in the opposite direction, then the distance will reduce at a rate of (Speed of 1 + Sped of 2)
If two the persons/vehicles are moving in the same direction, then the distance will reduce at a rate of (Speed of 1 - Sped of 2)

Since Fred and Sam are moving in the opposite direction, hence distance will reduce in the rate of (Speed of Fred + Speed of Sam)
Time after which they meet = 45/(4 + 5) = 5 hours.
Hence miles walked by Sam in 5 hours = 5*5 = 25 miles.
