Hi All,
This question can be solved by TESTing THE ANSWERS.
We're told that Pete has some apples, he sold 40% more than he ate and that he sold 70 apples. We're asked how many he ate.
Since he sold 40% MORE than he ate, and he sold 70 apples, the number of apples that he ate must be LESS than 70. Also, the answer will likely have to be a 'nice round number' (so that we can increase it by 40% and end up with 70 - which is a nice round number).
Let's TEST Answer B: 50 apples
IF....
Pete ate 50 apples, then...
(1.4)(50) = 70 apples were sold.
This is an exact MATCH for what we were told, so this MUST be the answer.
