8 pints = 1 gallon
60 pints = 7.5 gallons

The ratio of Brandy to OJ to Buttermilk = 1:3:6

Answer choice B maintaining the ratio gives us a total of 60 pints.

1 gallon = 8 pints
7.5 gallons = 60 pints

Buttermilk = 2 orange
orange = 3 brandy

buttermilk+orange+brandy = 60
2orange+orange+1/3orange = 60
10 orange = 180
orange = 18 pints

Step #1: Ratio of Milk (M) : Orange (O): Brand (B) --> Milk = 2O: Orange= 3B: B=B
Step #2: Convert the ratio to one variable: 2O = 2 * 3B = 6B --> New Ratio: 6B:3B:B
Step #3: Solve the ratio for 7.5 gallons --> 10B = 7.5 --> B = .75
Step #4: How many pints of orange juice are needed --> 3 * .75 = 2.25 Gallons
Step #5: Convert gallons to pints* (I had to look this conversion up ... is this something to memorize for the gmat?) 1 gallon = 8 pints --> 2.25 * 8 = 18 pints

Hi, answer seems fairly straight forward, however as a metric-loving Canadian, will they provide conversions like this (8 pints per gallon) on the GMAT?

Not a huge deal, just curious.

7.5 gallons=60 pints
let j=pints of orange juice required
60/j=10/3
j=18 pints

Same here. I don't know what gallons and pints are (everything is in kilos and liters over here). I spent 5 five minutes wondering what was wrong with my answer, please add the conversion rate in the question Bunuel. Thanks

My 2 cents:

Buttermilk=2x Orange Juice

Orange juice= 3 x Brandy, meaning Brandy=Orange.j/3

Equation will be 7.5=Buttermilk+orange juice +brandy which will be 7.5=2*orange.j+Orange.j+Orange.j/3

to get ridd off fraction, multiply both sides with 3

22.5(gallons)=6*Orange.j+3*Orange.j+Orange.j , which is 22.5(Gallons)=10*orange.j

Answer is given in pints so we multiply 22.5*8=180 pints.

180=10*Orange.j
Number of Orange juice pints =18

Asnwer B

IMO B in these question we need to find ratio between buttermilk, orange juice and brandy which is bm:oj= 2:1, oj: b= 3:1 and all over bm:oj:b = 6:3:1 so total orange juice in 7 1⁄2 gallon is 15*3*8/2*10 = 18 pints.
*bm= buttermilk
*oj= orange juice
*b= brandy

Solution:

7.5x8=60 pints

Buttermilk+Orange Juice+Brandy=60
6X+3X+1X=60
10X=60
X=6

Question asks for orange juice pint requirement only. Therefore, 3X = 3(6) =18

Lets convert everything to pint = 7.5 *8 = 60

BM : OJ : BR -------- 6x : 3x : x

10 x = 60
X = 6

OJ = 3x = 3*6 = 18 pints
