20% were selected,
80% were not selected (15 CPR + 17 Not CPR)= 32 = 80%
20%= 8

32+8=40

The total amount of skiis not selected were 32 and that 32 represented 80 percent of the persons who tried out for ski patrol. If 32 people was 80 percent, then 100 percent is 40 people. IMO A

Twenty percent of the skiers that tried out for the ski patrol were selected. Of those that were not selected, 15 skiers were CPR certified and 17 were not. How many skiers tried out for the ski patrol?

A. 40
B. 50
C. 60
D. 70
E. 80

We are told that 20 percent were selected. This means 80% were not selected.
Total number of people not selected = 32

Total people who applied = 32/ (80/100) = 40
Option A

We can let the number of skiers who tried out = n; thus:

0.2n = selected, thus 0.8n = not selected

Notice that the number of skiers that were not selected is 15 + 17 = 32. So, we have:

0.8n = 32

n = 40
