This question can be solved algebraically; it can also be solved by TESTing THE ANSWERS.

We're told that 20% of the skiers that tried out for the ski patrol were selected and that of those NOT selected, 15 skiers were CPR certified and 17 were not. We're asked for the total number of skiers who tried out for the ski patrol.

Let's TEST Answer B = 50 total skiers

20% of 50 = 10 were selected
50 - 10 = 40 were NOT selected

15 with CPR + 17 without CPR = 32
40 is TOO HIGH, which means there had to be FEWER total skiers. There's only one answer that fits...
