When a certain number X is divided by 63, the remainder is 27. What is the remainder when X is divided by 7?

A. 2
B. 3
C. 4
D. 5
E. 6

Grouping can be used here too.
When x balls are divided in groups of 63, we make groups of 63 balls each and 27 balls are leftover. When the same x balls will be divided into groups of 7, each group of 63 will neatly split into nine groups of 7 balls each. Out of 27 balls, we can make three groups of 7 balls each and we will be left with 6 balls.

Answer (E)

Given: When a certain number X is divided by 63, the remainder is 27.
Asked: What is the remainder when X is divided by 7?

X = 63k + 27; where k is an integer
X = 7(9k+3) + 6

We can basically find out the number by adding 27 to 63. So the number is 90.

We know 91 is a multiple of 7. So 90 will leave a remainder of 6.
