I find it easiest to handle these problems with the two-way table. If you do so with this problem you will get that the proportion who are male and take 1 week is 10.8%.

The population as whole takes 25% so 14.2% of the female workers take 1 week of vacation.

14.2% of 200 million is 28.4 million (you could have even rounded off and estimated the men at 11% and the women at 14% as the answers are far enough apart.

Why can't we calculate the following way:-

We know 25% took 1 week vacation.
Out of 25%, 20% of male workers took 1 week which is = 21.6 million

Now, out of the remaining 25%, 5% is for female workers. So, 5% of 92 = 4.6 million.

Thus, A.
Can you please tell me what is wrong with this approach.

its 25% of all the work force
so 25/100 * 200 = 50 million ...(in 50 M we have 20% of male workforce and rest female )

given that 20% male took leave -- so 20/100 * 54/100*200M = 21.6 M
rest women = 50 M- 21.6 M = 28.4

Hi All,

To properly answer this question, you have to make sure that you're using the proper terms. The "25%" who take 1 week of vacation is 25% of the TOTAL workers (but we do NOT know how many of that 25% are male or female).

Since 20% of MALE WORKERS took 1 week of vacation, you CAN calculate that number. It's....

(200 million)(.54)(.20) = 21.6 million

However, we are NOT given any information on the percent of WOMEN who took 1 week of vacation, so we have to subtract the totals to get that number...

25% of 200 million = 50 million took 1 week of vacation
21.6 million MALES took 1 week of vacation
50 million - 21.6 million = 28.4 million FEMALES took 1 week of vacation.

Final Answer:

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
