John walks 3 miles in 30 minutes, how long will it take him to walk 4.5 miles?

A. 0.25 hours
B. 0.45 hours
C. 0.75 hours
D. 1.5 hours
E. 4.5 hours

speed = 3/30 = 0.1 miles/minute

time taken for 4.5 miles = 4.5/0.1 = 45 minutes = 0.75hrs

Hi All,

Since this is essentially just a rate question, you can approach the 'math' in a variety of ways. If you have a pacing issue with any section of the GMAT though, simply getting a question correct is NOT the only goal - you have to think about whether you're approaching the prompt in the most efficient way possible or not.

It's worth noting that nothing on the GMAT is ever random - thus, the specific wording of the prompt, and the numbers involved, might provide you with a 'shortcut' in terms of how to approach the question.

Here, we're told that it takes John 30 minutes to walk 3 miles. We're then asked how long it would take John to walk 4.5 miles. Notice how 4.5 miles is exactly 50% greater then 3 miles... that means that the time it takes to walk that distance is 50% greater too...

(30 minutes)(1.5) = 45 minutes

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

John walks 3 miles in 30 minutes, how long will it take him to walk 4.5 miles?

A. 0.25 hours
B. 0.45 hours
C. 0.75 hours
D. 1.5 hours
E. 4.5 hours

Since John can walk 3 miles in 30 minutes he can walk 3 miles in 1/2 hour. Thus, his rate is 3/(1/2) = 6 mph.

Thus, it will take him 4.5/6 = 45/60 = 3/4 = 0.75 hours to walk 4.5 miles.

Answer: C

Given:
3 miles-30 mins
Let x= minutes needed to walk 4.5 miles
4.5 miles- x mins
3/4.5=30/x
x=(30/3)*4.5
x= 45 mins
which is equal to
45mins/60mins= 0.75 Hours.

Hence C is the correct answer.
Bunuel, please let me know if this is the correct approach
