How many feet will a sound travel in 10 seconds if it is traveling at 720 miles per hour (1 mile = approx. 5,280 feet)?

A. 15,218
B. 12,640
C. 11,124
D. 10,560
E. 9,780

Solution

    • We know that \(Distance = Speed * Time\).

    • We need to find the Distance in Feet.

    • Time given \(= 10\) seconds

      o Thus, we need to convert the Speed into Feet per second to find the distance in feet.

    • Speed \(= 720\) mile/hour

      o Since \(1\) mile = \(5280\) Feet

      o \(720\) miles\(= 5280*720\) feet

      o And \(1\) hour \(= 60\) mins \(= 60*60\) seconds

    • Thus, \(Speed = 720 * \frac{5280}{(60*60)}\) feet per seconds \(= 1056\) feet per seconds

    • Distance \(= Speed * Time\) \(= 1056 * 10 = 10560\) feet.

    • Therefore, the correct answer is Option D.

Asked: How many feet will a sound travel in 10 seconds if it is traveling at 720 miles per hour (1 mile = approx. 5,280 feet)?

Speed = 720 miles/hr = 720*5280/60*60 = 12*88 = 1056 feet/second
Time = 10 seconds
Distance = Speed * Time = 1056 * 10 = 10560 feet
