If it took the CEO 1.5 hours to reach his office building from home and he spent 4 times as long driving as he did flying, what is the distance from his home to his office building?

A. 84
B. 75
C. 72
D. 60
E. 18

We are given that a CEO traveled at a rate of 50 mph when driving and then 80 mph when traveling in a helicopter. Since he traveled for 4 times as long when driving as he did when riding in the helicopter, we can let the time flying = t and the time driving = 4t. Since he spend a total of 1.5 hours traveling, we can create the following equation to determine t:

t + 4t = 1.5

5t = 1.5

t = 1.5/5 = 0.3

Thus, the flying time is 0.3 hour and the driving time 4 x 0.3 = 1.2 hours. Finally, the distance he drove was 50 x 1.2 = 60 miles and the distance he flew was 80 x 0.3 = 24 miles.

So, the total distance is 60 + 24 = 84 miles.

Solution:


Total travel time = 1.5 hours
Total driving time = 4 * total flying time.
So Driving time = 4/%*1.5=1.2 hours
Flying time = 0.3 hour

Total distance covered = 1.2 * 50 + 0.3* 80( Speeds of flying and driving given in the question)
= 84 miles

Hence Answer =A.

Given: Time taken while driving = 4*Time taken while flying: T = 4t
Total time taken = 4t + t =1.5 hours
t = 0.3 hours

Distance driven = 50*4*0.3 = 60 miles
Distance flown = 80*0.3 = 24 miles

Total = 60 + 24 = 84 miles
