These kind of problems are easiest when you assume numbers for the various variables.
Since the cost for shipping the product upto a purchase value of p is s, assume p = 100$, and s is 4$
It is said in excess of p$, an additional 5% is charged on the excess.
If the total charge is 140$, an additional 40$(which is the value of x) is charged over the purchase minimum of p(which is 100$)
5% of this additional 40$ is 0.05*40 = 2$.
Since the total shipping cost is s + additional 5% on the excess 40$(x-p)= 4 + 2 = 6$
Now all we need to do is find an answer option which gives a value of 6$ for a purchase value of 140$
Only (Option D) s + 0.05(x – p) =>\(4 + 0.05(140$ - 100$) = 4 + 0.05(40) = 6$\) gives us the exact shipping cost.
